Humulus lupulus Western Brew Hops are perennial vines that are very easy to grow in our climate. Hops are most famous for their use in the Beer brewing industry, so if you want to brew your own beer; this is the plant for you! Both the leaves and young shoots of this species are edible. Humulus lupulus plants are fairly quick growing and require support for them to climb. They are easily grown up trellis’ or rambling over post or fences. The vines themselves grow to around 6-9 metres in length each year, with a spread of 1-2 metres. Hops will die back in Autumn each year, and regrow each spring. The leaves are green and deeply lobed, similar to a maple leaf but with serrated edges. Flowers which grow in a branching group are cone-shaped, ripening from light green to brown, with a distinctive yeasty, apple-like scent. Lovely grown through a hedge, it’s a great plant for wildlife. Supplied in a p15 pot.
