Bearded Iris, also known Iris Germanica, profusely bloom with colour & fragrance several times each year. Nearly indestructible, they thrive in most of the country and tolerate high heat and dry soil extremely well..
Bearded irises need to be planted with the rhizome, or root, just above the soil. This is because the rhizome needs to be baked by the sun in order to form flowers. Make sure that there is not too much competition from surrounding plants and remove any weeds.
Height:70-80 CM
Growing and Maintenance Tips:
- Bearded Iris need to be planted in full sun
- Soil that drains well is essential to the health of your bearded iris. Amend soil with organic matter such as compost, manure or peat moss prior to planting.
- Plant in autumn or early spring.
- Bearded Iris are quite sensitive to planting depth. Plant so that the rhizome is partially above ground, typically this planting depth is 1-2” below the soil surface.
- Bearded Iris will multiply over time, allow 60cm between plants.
- Water the planting area immediately after planting to eliminate air pockets. Bearded Iris are sensitive to rotting, any additional water in autumn or winter is not required.
